The back problems are a result of the dwarfism, rather than the breed. Dwarfism occurs occasionally in "normal breeds" (like Malamutes), and these would also be prone to back injuries.

If your dog is not a dwarf (obviously short legs and long back) then he is no more prone to back injury than any other dog.

Of course, using common sense regarding jumping is ALWAYS a good idea, regardless of dog.

Doxies and Bassets won’t have back problems if kept at their ideal weight.
From what you describe, your guy doesn’t seem to be out of proportion, or a long-bodied breed, either.
Your vet is right; you ARE a worry-wart.

Many dogs have health problems because they are overweight and don’t get enough exercise. My neighbor’s dachshund is 7 years old and has never had any back problems.

I have two Dachshunds and neither of them have back problems you just have t o be careful of their backs. Its not good to let them jump up or from high spaces. I couldnt give you measurements cause one my dogs is overweight and the other is not the proper size he is really small but I have papers.

I have a 4 year old female. She weighs about 12lbs. She is 25" from the base of her head to the base of her tail. and her chest is 19" around. Doxie’s have incredible upper body strength. They are breed for the purpose of pulling badger’s out of holes.
In German Dachshund means badger dog. Any way – if pup is any part dox. keep the weight down – we have doggie stairs up to the bed and the couch so our little girl doesn’t have to jump. Our vet says jumping is not good for doxie backs. Hope this helps.
