my son is younger than yours, he’s 20 months, but still not showing any signs of knowing when he’s going potty. i take him in the bathroom with me every time i go, and he has his own potty that he likes to sit on while i go on the big potty. he has pooped in the potty twice and peed once, but only because we caught him in the act. i feel like it’ll be another year before we get that one down.
and we’ve tried to take the side off his crib and see how he does.. he plays and plays and plays, and will play all through the night. so if you’re trying to convert him, take ALL of his toys out of his bedroom, so he has nothing to do but sleep. i don’t have a big house, so his toys are in his room. it may be a while before we get that one down too.. my son was in a big boy bed at 18 months, becuz he started climbing out of his crib. We put the mattress on the boxspring, directly on the floor and put a railing on that.
All babies are different obviously.
I put a potty in the bathroom at the age of 2 and waited for him to show interest, and i know it sounds odd, but my husband and i left the door open when we went potty, so he could see how its done. By 25 months he was interested and he was trained within 6 weeks. That being said, some kids enjoy the freedom of going whenever they please and may not show interest until 3, or later. My son did NOT like having a poopy diaper, and he actually pooped on the potty first, and did that everytime before he got used to the pee sensation feeling. Clearly your son will need to be in a big boy bed, if you expect him to use the potty at night.
As for preschool, I didn’t have the luxury of being a stay at home mom, and he was in daycare after he was 4 months old. they had a preschool program. References :
I started putting my son on the "big boy potty’" at 2 even though it was a little early. He will start to get the concept down. I noticed my son started pulling at his pants a lot more and in return starting going potty more and more. He is 2 and a half and using pull ups and doing pretty good. You don’t want to force it on them cause then they get bored and lose interest.
Big boy bed? I put my son in a Toddler bed. It transition form a crib to a toddler bed to a full size bed. But I would think if he doesn’t move a lot when he sleeps it might be ok. You can also purchase side rails for a regular bed to keep them from rolling.
Pre-school…when ever you are ready. I started my son 2days a week when he was 6months for social skills and I can tell when he is around other kids that don’t go to pre-school at all. My son is more advanced in language skills, social skills and just interacting with other kids his age.
We put our son in a big bed at 22 months (he kept climbing out of his crib). His crib converted into a toddler bed, but that was a joke. He kept falling out, driving my husband and me nuts! So we pulled out our futon, and he sleeps on that. It’s pretty perfect – lots of space for him to move around, and it’s really really low to the ground. So if he falls out, it’s not going to hurt.
And this winter, at 2 and 1/2, I started slowly potty training him. He knows how to use the potty now (he’ll be 3 July 1st), he can make it on his own if he’s naked from the bottom down, but he doesn’t have the skills to pull anything down. So I’m working with him on that, and waiting I’m due with my second in August, so I’ll probably try to pick things up a little more in a month or so.
and preschool – lots of kids go when they’re 3. We’re holding our son back until he’s 4 – he’s got too many new transitions heading his way, and he’s not one for change. So we’ll just wait, and let him be a kid for a while References :
Throw cheerios or fruitloops in the potty and tell him to try and hit them-if he does give him a sticker or a piece of candy or some kind of reward. My son was freakishly large and wound up getting a big boy bed at 10 months but most of the time 1yr to 18 months is a good time because they are easier to get to go to bed and get good habbits. Waiting longer sometimes can make them feel a little to free and they will keep getting up. Preschool? 4? Depends, they have preschool for 3 years olds to but it’s more like daycare. It really depends on your child. You and him will know when it’s time before anyone else. Just read his signs (climbing out of a crib obviously upgrade):) References :
