I think it depends on the dog and how smart and soon you teach him/her!
also if u work from 8-3 and u go to school..what ever time…i would say u should go home and check on the dog every 2-3 hours! Be sure to teach ur puppy very early for potty training. IF u work and go to school lots of hours i would say u wait for the dog and finish school or work for shorter hours!

Get a cage, introduce him to it properly, by leaving little treats and things in there, and when he is comfortable with the cage, you can leave him in there, but try to go during your lunch break (if you live close to where you work) and let him out to stretch and pee and poop

Try to imagine instead of going to work for those hours you were sitting in a cage. Now do you think your dog should be caged or let outside to run and play while you’re away?
If you have a yard let him outside! This way you don’t have to train him!

I wouldn’t get a young puppy unless I could take a few weeks off to work on house-training. Could you wait until Summer break or some time when someone can be at home for the first little while? If not, maybe consider getting an older pup or adult dog that is already house-trained and can be left for longer periods.

You should either get an older puppy that’s already potty trained or wait until the summer when the kids are out of school.

As a young puppy, they need to be let out every few hours to potty, they just can’t hold it longer than that.
A few years ago I got my first dog during the school year when she was 8 weeks old, and my mom had to rush home on her lunch break every day for 2 weeks to let her out.

Now, you could always teach the puppy to use puppy pads while you guys are away, but that will make the housebreaking process much much harder and longer.

We got a puppy and we work and go to school. We were able to come home at lunch time during potty training (which was helpful). Our Miniature Schnauzer potty trained quickly using the crate. We have a nice cozy bed, blankie and chew toys in there and we made her take routine naps in her crate until she was potty trained. She thinks of her crate as her own personal bedroom. We also trained our puppy to ring jingle bells hanging on the door knob when she needs out… it’s really nice.

Here is how you do it:
Make the crate as comfy for him as you can. Just treat the puppy like a toddler. After he goes potty outside, let him play around in the house for about an hour or two. Then it’s nap time (our puppy needed frequent napping anyway, I’m sure yours does too). We would even tell her it’s time for "beddie"… She would sleep for about an hour or two… as soon as she came out of the crate we would take her outside. She would almost always go… then she would come in the house and be good to go for another hour or two, then back in the crate.

Puppies typically won’t go where they sleep… so it teaches them bladder control. When they have free run of the house they don’t even have to try to control their bladder, they just find a spot in the house and go. You will only have to be this strict with the routine for a couple of months or until you can notice that he is controlling his bladder or that you can tell he understands that outside is the place to go. Of course, we always gave her a special treat when she went potty outside.

Feel free to contact me if you have further questions. She didn’t spend a lot of time in her crate… but it’s very effective.

some of these answers are really terrible!!! dogs are den animlas and if you do it roight the dog will associate the crate as being a den. a few hours while your at work wont hurt him, you just have to get a routine and exercise him before you put him in.

take off a few weeks from work???? what an idiot!! you can crate train a dog in two days…

It is possible to leave a puppy, but it is not ideal. Have you considered getting a slightly older dog? There are plenty of dogs under a year old being put to sleep because their owners are bored of them. They would probably be house trained already and would be better to stay alone for a few hours. Why not look at your local shelters or
