A 15 week old pup can do many commands if taught well.

Use lots of treats as rewards
Always stay positive, reward the good, correct the bad.
Don’t repeat commands…say it one time only.
Research clicker training it might help you out alot.

Good Luck, theres lots of good training articles on the web:)

dogs can be trained at any age, and actually learn better/faster while they’re younger.

I work at Petsmart and we start enrolling puppies at 10 weeks old. I have never heard 7 months… they should be done with basic training by then!

    Good luck!

Who told you a dog can’t be disciplined until 7 months? By then bad habits would begin to get ingrained in the dog’s head. Training of basic commands and good manners can begin as young as 8 weeks! Starting with simple obedience commands like sit and simple manner commands like teaching what NO means. If there are problems that need addressed, by all means address them NOW while hes young. A 7 month old Dobe is NOT small nor are they as easy to handle as a 15 week old dobe!

When my dog was a cute 20 pound puppy people actually told me to let him jump on people because "he’s just a puppy!" Had I let my dog jump I’m positive those same people that said "he’s just a puppy" wouldn’t like him jumping on them now at 80 pounds!! And he’s not even done growing!! I’m sure they’d REALLY love a 120+ pound dog jumping all over them!

Bottom line address problems NOW while the dog is young. Anything you won’t want the dog to do as an adult, you should not allow while he’s a puppy.

During training you do not discipline the pup for not doing what you want you praise the hell out of for getting it right. Puppies learn a lot faster then older dogs. But they will forget just as fast. It is a daily process. It will take taking him to a couple of classes to learn the basics, heel, sit, stay and come, and take it from there.

Get working with him now.. By the time my puppies are 4 and 5 weeks of age, I have them sitting for treats.. and coming when I call them. By the time they are 12-14 weeks of age they are fully housetrained, and come and ask to be let outside to pee.. Are crate trained and don’t cry at night unless they need to pee.. Doberman puppies are SMART, and the earlier you start training them, the better.. Keep things short and sweet with TONS of praise..

I start the moment I bring them home. Ignore them when they jump on you, praise the heck out them when they sit in front of you for pets. teaching them basic commands like sit, down, stay, watch me, walk on a leash, even simple tricks. The earlier you teach them how to learn the easier it will be the rest of their lives.

Debbi V, Why would you have to pay $500 – $600 for training. Contact your local human society or City parks. There are many local low cost training classes that you can take them to. In my area the cost runs around $75 to $100. for 5 to 8 week classes, depending upon the trainers.
