Water Dogs and the Portuguese Waterdog

The breeds known as water dogs include the:

- Labrador/Retriever

- Spaniel

- Portuguese Water dog

- French Water Dog(Barbet)

- Spanish Water Dog

Water dogs are in the News because the Obama family has chosen one for their pet.

The water dogs which are best known in the US, and the United Kingdom are Labrador retrievers, and spaniels. There is no UK breed called a specifically an American, UK or English waterdog but the spaniels probably come closest. On the Barbet breed web site it is recorded that, from ’The Pictorial Museum of Animated Nature’ by Charles Knight (London: 1844), “The water-spaniel is extremely useful to persons engaged in the pursuit of water-fowl; it swims well, is very hardy, and is an excellent retriever”.

The Water Dogs would also in some countries, we are told, act as couriers, carrying messages between ships and from ship to shore, and would dive into the sea to retrieve broken fishing nets and equipment that had gone overboard. Often they would have to dive under water to retrieve submerged articles.

The Portuguese Water dogs are typical of the water dog breed family. They are generally happy dogs, and sometimes in the case of the Barbet called laid-back, but the PWD needs to stay busy or it will get bored. You should have plenty of toys for it to play with and you may want to consider crate training when you are not at home. Generally healthy, some can develop hip dysplasia and eye problems such as cataracts. However, in spite of their thick, wavy coats, Portuguese Water Dogs are fairly easy to groom, needing only regular brushing and clipping.

Portuguese Water Dogs are very playful, obedient, and easy to train, plus they really enjoy retrieving games of any sort. They are medium-sized, usually described a spirited but obedient. They make a good dog for modern day boat owners. PWDs have a body that is slightly longer than tall, the top line is straight and level and the brisket reaches the elbows. Sometimes called ’Porties’, they have a broad chest and large head with a rounded skull, and heart-shaped ears that shouldn’t hang past their lower jaw.

They were, in times gone by, used for various duties while on board. The most used was their ability to retrieve nets and lost articles at sea, but some say that they were also good at herding fish to the nets. Another use was to get them barking in the fog to alert other boats of their location.

Portuguese Water Dogs are intelligent, rugged, robust, and love to work in and out of the water. They are exceptional swimmers and divers with great stamina.

As energetic, lively canines the Portuguese Water Dog adjusts well to almost any lifestyle. They need physical exercise and they love to swim.

If intending to show them please note that they are a very tightly controlled breed in the US, but for the whole breed that is good as we doubt there are very many, if any, puppy farms involving the breed.

Portuguese water dogs are medium sized, strong swimmers and active energetic family pets. in fact they can make very good family pets with their cheerful attitude.

PWD’s can have either a wavy or curly coat. Some people call this a tousled coat, and it requires regular brushing, and also clipping and trimming. But don’t expect your pet PWD to look like the show dogs you’ve seen in books or on TV, unless you are trained to do this or the trimmer you employ knows the technique.

They are a hypoallergenic breed making this a perfect choice for the Obama family.

They can come in black, black and white, brown, or brown and white. PWDs are very intelligent and obedient with those who work with them; but they are also self-willed, and not a breed for everyone!

Those who are considering a Portuguese Water Dog should talk with the breeder about their plans for training and being active with the dog, to make sure the breed is a good fit with your lifestyle.

So to summarize, Portuguese Water Dogs are a good indication of the dogs which represent this category of breed. They are very loving, independent and intelligent dogs. They love attention while being glued to their master’s side. Portuguese water dogs are known to be great family pets.

Does anyone have any puppy training tips?

I have a 10 week old GoldenDoodle named Eilidh (AYlee). She’s very sweet and I recently had to put a dog down for aggression. I don’t want to make any mistakes this time. I have a dog training book (Dog Training Made Easy) but I would like to know of any other tips to train her the right way. We have been very careful not to smack her when she’s "naughty" and we just yell "NO" in a harsh voice.

She’s still not potty trained but we’ve only had her two weeks and she goes outside most of the time. When she does go inside, I know it’s because WE aren’t paying attention.

I guess what I’m asking is the proper way to punish her when she’s eating my rug, or a shoe, or one of the kids toys. Right now we just say "NO" and give her one of her "Good girl toys.". Any ideas?
Also, I was told by my vet that she shouldn’t go to puppy training classes until she is 15 weeks, after all of her shots. Will that be too late?

Its not too early to start on the sit-stay and down- stay and come.. When she begins chewing, give her any of the above commands, and be persistant about her doing it..that way, when you do give her a treat, it is for a job well done…It also shows her that when she tries to create her own job, that you have a better one for her..
The Basics
SIT, COME, DOWN, STAY, HEEL.

SIT

Holding a treat in your left hand just above the pup’s nose, gently rest your right hand on pup’s rump.
Slowly move the treat in an upward motion while applying gentle pressure to the rump. ( you don’t want to push hard because if you do the dog will sit every time someone touches him and this is not good for competitive obedience)
as soon as pup sits say in a very happy excited tone "GOOD SIT" and give the treat.
Repeat exercise 7x. then take a play break and move on to something else.
very young pups should not train for more than a half hour each day
every time you put food bowl down or give a treat give the sit command, and wait for the sit. then once pup sits give treat or food down.
DO NOT move on to something new until pup has the new command down pat.

COME

walk away from pup about 10 feet to start. say pup’s name and "COME" in a happy voice. once pup comes praise it lavishly have a bit of a play and give it a treat.
Gradually increase the distance you walk away. and eventually once pup knows command only treat every 3rd come. tapering off until he comes every time with out treat using only praise.
this will take a few days to learn if you practice every day.

DOWN

Start with pup in sit. move hand with the treat between the pup’s front paws on the ground.
Say "DOWN" in firm but not loud voice.
pup might try and get treat without going down, don’t let him have it until he downs.
praise in happy voice "GOOD DOWN"
repeat 7x

STAY

Start pup in down position. say "STAY" in firm voice. walk to end of leash, backwards. if the pup moves say once only "AP" in a not pleased tone. go back do not say anything. put pup in down again repeat "STAY" walk backwards to end of leash.
pup does NOT get praise or treat until he stays for 30 seconds, then a minute, then 5 minutes. move times up each week.
after he can do a 5 minute down/stay every time. move on to a sit/stay doing exactly what you did for down/stay.
Once on leash sit and down/stays are reliable for 5 minutes each. drop the leash and walk away from your pup, your back to the pup. about 10 feet away. wait 5 min. recall your dog. with dog sitting in front of you once he reaches you. treat and praise.

HEEL

Please do NOT train with a choke collar. i recommend martingayles .
with dog on a short leash exactly beside you on your left side say "HEEL" if the dog starts to pull give a correction snap with leash on collar. and recommend "HEEL" the second your dog complies praise with "GOOD HEEL" in happy voice. and continue to walk , correct, and praise for 30 minutes.

Always end training sessions on a positive note. Never get angry with your pup for not responding to a command. Praise lavishly every time pup responds to a command.

Is it commonplace to limit water for a puppy working on potty training?

I know…obsessed with water today. I just never realized there was more than one way to water your dog :) Silly me!

Does it make potty training easier to limit water?

Is it potentially harmful to limit a puppies water?

I’ve only had one pup since I’ve been an adult and we never limited her water. None of the puppy training books mentioned it, and I never thought of it.
We never limited with Lacie and I was up every 2hrs during the night taking her out to potty for the first 2 months. I thought that was normal practice.
Right…well none of the dumb books I read said anything about withholding water at night. She never drank during the night, but she still had to pee every 2 hours like clockwork. I thought it was good training for if I ever have a newborn :) I was the walking dead for 2 months straight! Guess I shouldn’t bought some better books :D

I allow water when I’m home, but not in the crate (big mess)
no water after 10 only because we are up at 3 letting them out

now that you mention it, I did limit water when potty training, set it on the floor let em drink…take dog out, water goes up
but there is a water bowl ALWAYS when they learn to control their bladders

** I never liked what books had to say, I’m more of a trial and error kinda girl, its my way, and it works fine for all 5 of my dogs, yes even the foster pups

Puppy Training??????

What are good book on How to train a Puppy?

Thank you

Watch your puppy’s behavior while relieving himself outdoors so you can detect the warning signs and intercept him when indoors.

Step 2Stay outside as often as possible during nice weather so your puppy can develop a preference for eliminating outdoors. Help him develop a liking for surfaces like dirt and gravel by taking him outdoors to eliminate after eating, playing and sleeping, or, ideally, every 15 minutes.

Step 3When it’s time, go straight to a predesignated area and don’t leave until the puppy urinates.

Step 4Tuck your puppy into a cozy crate in your bedroom at night. Dogs are den animals and don’t like to soil the area where they sleep.

Step 5Carry the puppy outdoors when he becomes restless in the middle of the night, and wait until he’s finished relieving himself.

Step 6Supply a litter box (filled with sand or kitty litter) during the night, unless you plan on getting up every couple of hours to take him outside. If you do want to take him outside, set your alarm if you sleep too deeply to notice that your puppy has started fidgeting, and carry him outside at those times.

Step 7Carry the puppy outside first thing in the morning so he won’t soil the floors as he walks outside.

Step 8Be consistent with training. Consult a pet behaviorist if you have problems.

Step 9Reward your dog with puppy treats and praise every time he successfully eliminates outdoors.

Corrections and punishments for indoor accidents will only teach your puppy not to eliminate around you (even when outdoors), but won’t stop him from eliminating indoors when you’re not around. If you catch the puppy in the act, say ‘No!’ sharply and carry the puppy outside.Avoid giving your dog the message that
