Need a Great Idea? Feed Your Brain

A lot of great ideas happen when two or more other ideas collide to form something completely new.

Think of this like those old chemistry movies we used to watch in school. You had all of those atoms floating around and when two collided bam! A chemical reaction. Maybe something new was created. Maybe something exploded. Or maybe it all fizzled out and nothing happened.

Well, a similar reaction is going on inside your brain or muse. Except instead of atoms floating around theyre pieces of information or other ideas. As they drift about, they occasionally bump into each other. When that happens, you may get a new, third idea. Or a big explosion. Or absolutely nothing at all.

Now, if you have lots of atoms, or information and ideas, youre going to get lots of reactions. Some will fail. Some will be so-so. And some will be hot so hot, so full of energy, theyll have the power to change the trajectory of a business. Or even a life.

The problem occurs when you dont have lots of random information and ideas. Fewer atoms mean fewer reactions. On top of that, you still have to weed through the invariable duds. So the odds of landing that one amazing idea drop considerably.

But not to worry theres good news. You can increase your odds of getting those great ideas. Better yet, its fairly easy and painless. Below are three ways to get started.

1. Read, read and read some more.

The key is to keep it wide and shallow. What does that mean? Well, read lots and lots of different things, but keep it general. Read about sheep farming, finances, yoga, cooking, traveling, dog training, etc. But keep it general dont read deeply. You can even skim if thats all you have time for.

Start by subscribing to a couple of different magazines and e-zines. General interest magazines are really good for this Walt Disney used to read Readers Digest. Scatter them around the house by the bed, the couch, even the bathroom. Id put a few in your car as well for those times when you have to wait for an appointment.

When you have a few moments, flip through them. Skim a few paragraphs. See what catches your eye.

You can also buy or rent audio books and CDs and listen while you exercise, drive, do the dishes, etc.

Whatever you do, DONT read publications related to your industry. Thats for another time. This is brain-feeding time, not keeping up in your profession time.

2. Travel the world.

When you travel, you open yourself up to lots of new and exciting experiences. New sights, new sounds, new smells, new tastes, new textures. And they all have the ability to form a reaction with something else.

Dont have time to hop on a plane to India? Take a day trip to a town youve never visited. Or, if you can only spare a few hours, seek out a park youve never been to or a museum youve been meaning to see or even that new cute little shop that just opened. You can always find somewhere new to visit no matter how long youve lived in the same city. And if youre truly desperate, try walking around your neighborhood on the opposite side of the street in the opposite direction you normally walk. (It can help jolt you out of rut.)

3. Open yourself up to new things.

Take the time to try new things. Meet people outside your normal circle of friends. Attend associations, nonprofits, hobby groups outside of the ones you usually go to. Listen to speakers on topics you know nothing about. Take a class at a community college about something outside your scope of knowledge. Or even have dinner at an ethnic restaurant youve never tried.

Now Im not just talking about typical creative things, like taking an art class or learning to belly dance. If youre a creative professional, take a class on doing your own taxes or budgeting your finances or repairing your car. (Oooh, I bet all you creative folk felt a chill when I mentioned that.) The point is to really stretch yourself past your comfort zone. Make yourself uncomfortable. Its not only a great way to grow, but its a fabulous way to keep your muse fat and happy.

And that helps keep the ideas flowing.

Creativity Exercises Prepare the banquet

Over the next month, I want you do to at least one tactic from each of the above three techniques.

1. Read something you know nothing about. Even if you only spend five minutes skimming an article about quilting when the last time you tried to sew a button on a shirt you stabbed yourself with the needle and got blood all over the material.

2. Travel somewhere youve never been before. Even if its an antique shop and the most antique piece of furniture in your house is a bookshelf your parents bought from Sears when you were a little kid.

3. Stretch yourself in a different and potentially scary way. Even if its attending one of those Home Depot gardening workshops despite every plant youve tried to grow didnt and if your thumb was any blacker it would fall off.

You know how you work better when youre not hungry, see how well your muse starts churning out ideas after a good meal.

Of all of these, this one is probably the scariest. But, it also has the potential to be the most powerful. Traveling has so many fabulous benefits for your creative soul I could write an article just about that, but for now Ill limit my comments to brain food. I know, I know, I can hear the groans already. But I already have too much to read. How can I fit more reading in? Never fear, there are ways to do this. (Remember I did say this was painless.)

Dog who is afraid of vehicles?

I have a 9 month old Shetland Sheepdog that we purchased about three months ago. He is a very sweet dog but he is also very timid towards loud noises, thumps and music. He had multiple issues when he arrived with us which stemmed from the breeder that we purchased him from. At 6 months he did not know his name, simple commands (sit, stay, lay down, come) ect. He had never been on a leash and had only been in a vehicle a few times for vet visits. They had also not started on training him to go outside which we corrected quite quickly.
I was a bit upset as a trainer and amateur dog psychologist to see a 6 month old in such bad mental state. He was obviously loved by the breeder, he was healthy and on a good diet but his social skills were seriously lacking considering he was living in a small city home with over 6 other dogs. Instead of bonding with a human through continuous interaction and training sessions, he bonded with the other dogs.
When he first arrived to his new home he wanted little to do with us, if you brought out a leash he would take off in the opposite direction, if you told him "come here" instead of "come" he would take off. I really don’t know just what he went through at the breeders but i sense there was a lot more punishment then encouragement.
We also have a 2 year old female sheltie who we received at 8 weeks. She is my training and demo dog. You can really see the difference between a socially active dog and a one who lacked that association.
Now after the three months he has been with us, Gibson has changed dramatically. Socially he has opened up and now seeks attention from us and strangers a like. We have worked extensively with him in his training and he is well on his way to catching up with our little female in the way of tricks. Loud noises he is getting much better dealing with them through continuous desensitization.
There very few things left that keep him from being a well balanced dog. He walks and heels well on our little outings around the town, but the moment we walk back into town his tail instantly tucks and he starts to cower again. We live in a small town of maybe 200, there is little traffic and not a lot going on besides the train the goes by every once in awhile. Once we reach town we HAVE to put the leash on him or he will take of back home despite my commands that he knows so well while training. He is getting better in this section and we just make sure to have the leash on him to keep his bolting urges from hitting the red zone. He is not at all aggressive in nature but looks to his pack for protection.
Our biggest issue is something I haven’t dealt with before and is new to me. Vehicles! Gibson is so terrified of vehicles that if you let him out in the yard and even look like you might go towards the trucks he either takes off if he can, or goes back to the door and won’t move. As far as i know he has never had a bad experience with a vehicle. I have taken him on the leash to the truck a safe distance so he is comfortable and have banged doors and hit the sides of the trucks to make noise and while he gets a little anxious he does settle down. The next time you go out it is the same thing.
Trying to get him into the truck is a whole different story! He will go up to the truck now and I make him sit and wait until i open the door and tell him to jump, but if anyone else tries to put him in the truck he will literally jump into the side of the truck over and over before you can get the door open.
Backflips have also been present when near a vehicle. Don’t even get me started on if the truck is running.
Any advise in this area would be great! I have never had a dog that didn’t like going for a ride! I have tried everything I can think of, including research but nothing seems to be helping this issue.

Thanks guys. As far as putting the other dog in the truck first it has absolutly no affect on weather he wants to go in or not. Our other dog loves to go for rides but gibson just despises it.

As for Ceaser. I do watch him actually! I really like the techniques he uses and have tried praising and treats but he gets himself so worked up once he thinks he is going to have to even pass the truck to go on a walk that he won’t take treats. He is fine once he gets in the truck, no drooling or panting. He actually seems to enjoy it after we get going. It is just the outside and the getting in part he hates.

We don’t use crates I have delt several dogs who are put in crates all day and usually that creates more problems then fixes. I don’t like them. We kennel train pups for bed time to teach patience and help with using the outside as a bathroom but that is it. As far as i am concerned, if a crate or kennel is needed to help control and animal then it isn’t properly trained.

Our dog didn’t like going for rides either till we brought my sons dog along once..now she jumps right in with the other dog..maybe if he is your only dog borrow another ..We also gave her treats as a reward for jumping right in..We drove around for awhile, got out at a park walked a bit and then did it all over for 5 or 6 times a week..Now it’s no problem..repitition is the key and even 2 times a day will help..

Anyone familiar with a product called Comfort Zone?

Its supposed to stop your dog from urinating in the house especially on nice carpets. Its a spray you put into the air like a regular deodorizer.
Does it work? My Golden is seven years old and house trained.

All it does is leave a nice residue all around the plug on the wall. If your dog is urinating on your carpets, he isn’t house trained.

There is only one miracle product that will prevent your carpet from being soiled- a dog crate. Crate him when you cannot watch him and the accidents will magically stop.

life or death situation?

READ THE FULL QUESTION
my dog as you probably know in my other questions is extremely violent and is a BAD DOG. my parents are considering to take him to a humane sociaty to put him to sleep. I really need some intensive or extreme dog training that could even include hitting. he is what i think is called a red zone dog, a dog so dangerous, its almost on the brink of being put to sleep.i dont want some crap like time outs or training lessons. i need REALL STUFF give me a facility or somethinng that has people that teach that dog how to just..change. that ceaser milano (i dunno his name) dog whisperer guy is weird, i dont even think he does anything but apparently all his videos shows some good results but i dont believe it. . my parents think hes a load of bull and i do too. i need something that will make an extreme make over on my dog. hes crazy. i need something like military training for dogs (not actually learning how to fight, just that intense) so give me a website of something
yeah, the hitting thing doesnt work
and he is still a puppy so i think i can change it in time
more help plz

Your dog clearly has dominance issues. The only way you are going to be able to correct this is if your parents are willing to participate too.
Dogs’ behavior very closely resembles that of wolves and your dog obviously thinks he is the alpha "wolf". If you’re going to keep this dog, that has to change and very quickly.
My example: We had a Chihuahua like this. I know Chihuahuas aren’t quite same thing as a retriever, but this is how it had to work:
Fruity (the Chihuahua) evidently got it in his head that he was the alpha male of the household and my mother was the alpha female (no he never tried to mate with her lol). He even attacked my dad, who is a HUGE guy. What made it worse was that when Fruity would stare us in the eyes and growl and bite at us, my mother would coddle him and pet him, and this only reinforced his behavior. He would sleep with whoever he saw fit, and if we so much as moved in out sleep, he would get pissed and bite and growl at us.
The showdown: I was eating dinner on the couch and Fruity hopped up next to me, his ears were forward, his tail and head up, and he growled as he approached me. When I said, "Fruity, No!" He snarled. He reared up on his hind legs to take a bite of my food, and when I reached over to push him away, he bit the *#@& out of my hand. That was the last straw.
I was only 14 at the time but already knew a lot about dogs and their behavior and knew that we had a dominance issue.
Unfortunately, human violence is a bit much for dogs. Hitting and kicking a dog usually only makes it either more violent, or very, very shy and terrified of people. I LOVE dogs. At one time, I wanted to be a dog show judge and read up as much as I could about the different breeds, their temperaments, and dog and wolf behavior in general. I’ve grown up around dogs all my life and have even risked my own life on more than one occasion to save a dog. BUT while dogs are our friends, our companions, and are for the most part intelligent, they are NOT people. I believe they do have feelings, but their thought process isn’t nearly as complex as ours, their family structure is very different, they communicate not at all like us, and they are very primitive and simple animals.
So I decided that starting with me, I had to get the point across that this dog was NOT the boss, so what I did was buy a thick pair of leather gloves, and every time Fruity would act dominant towards me, I would more or less attack him like another dog would. I would grab him by the scruff of his neck, pin him on his back on the floor, and growl down at him, shaking him by his scruff occasionally (not hard enough to make his eyes rattle, but enough to get my point across.) My two younger sisters would see me do this, and eventually they got the idea that they should do it too. After a couple of months, we never had any more problems with Fruity, and when he passed away at a ripe old age, he was one of the sweetest dogs you’d ever meet.
We had a similar problem with a yellow lab we babysat for my uncle for a few months. With him, it was a bit more difficult. Bigger dogs don’t get scared when you stand over them and growl or shake them by the scruff of the neck. And it seemed like I was the only person in our family he had a problem with, but when I would walk outside, he’d follow me around with his hair standing up, growling, and if I sat down or laid down on the ground, he would immediately come and stand over me, exhibiting clearly dominant behavior. I had to grab him by the scruff of his neck and the loose skin on his back, lift him up into the air, and flop him onto his back on the ground, and then choke him. (I know that may seem extreme, but it’s what wolves do; don’t choke him until he’s unconscious, just enough to make him cough and yelp.) I finally got the point across that I was not to be trifled with and after that, we got along fine.
My suggestion to you, if you really want to keep this dog alive (bc I have a feeling if you turned him over to a shelter, they euthenize him), is read up as much as you can about dogs, wolves, and canine behavior and body language. Figure out if he’s just being rough, or if he really thinks he’s the boss (and from what you said about him especially getting after your mom, he sees her as the omega–which is the lowest ranking member of the pack that gets picked on a lot by the other wolves/dogs–and he’s centered his attention on her). And read as much info as you can with dogs who need to get the idea that they are the subordinate animal.
Also, just a tip, when feeding him, don’t just pour food into his bowl and let him have it. Feed him by hand, yourself, even if it’s a piece at a time, and have your family members do it too. The alphas always eat first. Tie him up, and eat in front of him. If your family eats dinner together, let him watch. Then, when you and your family finish eating, feed him. If you want any more advice or have an questions, feel free to email me. You should be able to get my contact info from my page. Hope everything works out for you.

There was an SPCA website with cesar milan and big X over him with a title saying that he was inhumane!?

How can they be so hypocritical? Cesar trains dogs with behavior that is in the "red zone" and without his help these dogs would more than likely be put to sleep. Cesar takes these dogs rehibilitates them so that they get a second chance at life. Now this SPCA website says that they put down dogs who have serious behavior problems. So they are saying that it is humane to just put down a red zone dog rather than training it and giving it a chance at life. To me this is so hypicritcal and that this SPCA believes that killing dogs is more humane than doing what cesar does with dogs. Cesar gives them a chance to live!!!! I applaud him for what he does.
ok literally this website says that he is inhumane because he uses a dominent voice "harsh" voice…and they say that we should and I quote
"You have to be nice and politically correct to the dog"… hahaha ya right if i did this my dog she would be like what do you take me for an idiot and keep doing what shes doing haha!

Obviously I would NEVEr and no one should ever harm an animal. Which Cesar does NOT harm animals! He just uses dominent authority.

Could you imagin asking your kids politely to do something all the time they would laugh at you and not take you seriously. You must set boundaries and be the authority or they will walk all over you! The same is true with dogs.

I agree with you, he does wonders for dogs I hate seeing like animal cops and a dog is too aggressive and has to be put down, I think they should be sent to cesar and he can work with them and get them to be good pets.

How can I get my dog to stop growling at me and my other dogs when it feels threatened?

My poodle/doxin growls each time my other dogs goes near him when it has a toy or object in it’s possesion. I have been trying to train my dogs using the "dog whisperer" style. By not reacting and yelling, but by using a stearn "ssh" sound. But it has not been working. Especially when he goes into his cage where he is in his "safety zone". I even try saying NO and if I try to take the object away, he gets even more aggressive. What techniques should I try or do?
I have 2 other male dogs, which make the growling a little more tense and I take the toys(such as rawhides) away because it causes the dog I am talking about to growl and bark which causes the other male dogs to react and sometimes growl and bark and sometimes bite back. He doesn’t growl all the time, only when I am too close.

Your dog has a superiority complex. Your dog feels he is the leader and the leader makes the rules. You need to show him that you are the leader. There are a few things you can do such as, gesture eating, but there are too many things to list here.
For more information contact me at: thepetproject@zoomshare.com
I will be happy to give you a list of the things you need to do to stop this behaviour.

Discover Six Dog Behavior Modification Steps for Dealing With Fear Aggression in Dogs

By the time you finish reading this article, you’ll have a better understanding of fear aggression in dogs. Plus you’ll also know several dog training behavior modification techniques to use when dealing with this problem in your dog.

What Causes Dog Behavior Problems Like This One?

Fear aggression in dogs can have many causes. Certain dog breeds, like the herding breeds, are more prone to this problem than others. Neglecting to socialize your dog when he’s a puppy can contribute to canine aggression towards strangers. Past abuse may also be a factor.

Even if puppy socialization isn’t an issue, many dogs go through a “shy” period when they hit adolescence at around six months. It’s important to keep exposing your pup to lots of situations to avoid him becoming wary of new people and new animals.

Dog Behavior Modification Techniques

If your dog is already displaying fear aggression, here are six steps for dog training behavior modification you can use to desensitize your dog to strangers. What you’ll be doing is teaching your dog that strangers are great!

To start, you’ll need a few volunteers to act as strangers. You dog also needs to be on a leash so he’s under your control at all times.

First, you need to identify your dog’s favorite treat. It shouldn’t be something he gets on a regular basis. Steak, liver, chicken, cheese, hot dogs, whatever it is, it should be something he absolutely loves.

Second, the only time he gets this favorite treat is when a stranger is present. You’re training your dog to associate this wonderful treat with a stranger being around.

Third, figure out what is triggering your dog to show canine aggression. He may be OK if strangers are outside, but not in the home. He may be scared of all men, certain men, or kids. Do sudden movements, or somebody getting too close agitate him? Observe him carefully to see what sets him off.

The fourth step is to expose your dog to a stranger. Stay inside your dog’s comfort zone. You want to move slowly so you don’t provoke him to an aggressive display. Your dog should know a stranger is around, but he shouldn’t be overly concerned about it.

Fifth, as soon as your dog is aware of the stranger, start feeding him treats. Sixth, before the dog starts getting aggressive toward the stranger, you either have the stranger leave, or your and your dog will leave.

It’s very important that your dog is continuing to eat the treats. If he won’t eat, then the stranger is too close. If the dog isn’t relaxed enough to eat, you’re moving too quickly with the dog training behavior modification.

Remember that you aren’t rewarding your dog for doing something right. What you’re doing is changing his emotional state.

More Tips For Dog Behavior Modification

You’ll continue to work within your dog’s comfort zone, varying the distance the stranger is from your dog. The stranger may be six feet away one day, eight the next, seven after that. As long as aggressive dog behavior isn’t seen, you’re doing fine.

Continue these steps for several weeks. Now you’re going to start working outside your dog’s comfort zone by having the stranger come a little closer, maybe five feet away. Keep working to reduce the distance your dog is from the stranger.

You can see that this is a long, slow process. It can be tempting to try to move along faster, but if you push too hard, you can undo all your hard work. Keep the training sessions short, and end the session if your dog is getting nervous.

Do yourself a favor and find a good dog training course. This can be a very helpful aid when using dog behavior modification techniques. You’ll want to look for one that includes a free consultation with an experienced dog trainer so you can get help, if necessary.
