What are your best tips for potty training a puppy?

We have 2 8wk old puppies. They do "ok" with potty training but of course have accidents. Just wondering what has worked the best for others.

First and foremost never, never, never, hit your puppies. Only repremand the pups for going in the house if you catch them in the act. A firm "No, you potty outside," and them take them outside. Take them out every 1-2 hours at first, increasing the time between visits outside as they grow, and shortly after eating. Don’t give them the chance to go in the house by keeping them in a crate when you are not at home. Look for cues that they need to go outside, like sniffing intently at the floor. Whenever they do go outside, give tons of praise let them know they are doing what you want, they want to please you and make you happy!
Also I have found it to be helpful to reward with a treat, when they do go potty outside so they know they are going outside to potty not to play.
And never rub thier nose in any messes they make, this can make them very ill or make them think that they are supposed to eat thier feces or urine

Can anybody recommend an excellent book for obedience training dogs?

I hate the thought of paying hundreds to have our puppy trained when we could do it ourselves. Can someone help recommend a very good book to us,we have a border collie currently 8 weeks old.

There are several books I would recommend. One is "Good Owners, Great Dogs," by Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson. "Secrets to Dog Training", by Dog Trainer Expert, Daniel Stevens. It’s a terrific book on how to train dog. http://kingdom-of-dog.blogspot.com/

You can do a lot yourself, but having your puppy in a structured class, along with reading and working with your pup at home, is the best way to do things. Interacting with other pups and people in a setting where you expect your pup to obey in spite of major distractions is something you can’t do at home. Our local park district charges $84 for an 8 week class. I would highly recommend a lot of reading, practice at home and the classes.

Potty training an older dog?

My dog is two and a half and we’re just now getting around to finally potty training him. For the most part he knows to do his business outside, but if no one is looking and he has to go, he won’t hesitate to go on the floor. So he has to wear a diaper at all times, put still won’t hesitate to pee in it. Any suggestions for potty training an older dog?
I DO NOT need to hear how i should have potty trained him earlier. that does nothing. if you have something to help, feel free to post. but please keep unnecessary comments to your self.

You house train any dog the same way. Take him out at regular times and praise/reward him when he goes in the right place. When inside, you must watch him and be ready to get him out if you think he’s about to go. You said it yourself – if no one is looking, he’ll go on the floor – so make sure someone is always looking, so that you can prevent him from going on the floor! When you are gone or to busy to watch him carefully enough, he should be crated or confined to a small room/area.

my pit bull puppy wont walk when i try to walk him. what is wrong with him? please help?

he lays down and wont get up and when i let go of his leash he runs back to the house
he is only 3 months old

He doesn’t want to walk because he doesn’t like the leash, try again until he starts.

Any dog that is let off of its leash will go where it pleases, either it be the dogs home or its house.

I want to enter my dog in obedience trials, but she hates other dogs. Can I make her like them?

Kasi knows all of the commands she needs to in order to win an obedience trial. She also loves people and playing with kids. She listens and reacts to commands beautifully, but she hates other dogs. I know as well as anyone that a dog can’t compete if she want’s to fight. Is there a way to fix my problem??
note: she’s not fixed

No, you can’t "make your dog like other dogs." My dog is just like that and we do just fine. We take classes and go to matches all the time. But I have spent the money to se a behavioral specialist to learn how to manage my dog and you should do the same thing. You don’t want to get booted from participating because you were unable to control your dog. There is also a big difference between "aggressive" and "reactive" dogs and you need a professional to tell you what you have and how to handle it.

Will I make my dog agressive if u use a shock collar?

I have a 75 pound pit mix. He is fully trained, except for when we got for walks. He gets excited (happy/wants to play) when he sees other dogs and doesn’t respond to my corrections. He usually pulls me very hard, and could pull me into oncoming traffic if he wanted to. If the person walking their dog sees me and my huge dog pulling they usually get very scared due to his appearance. This sometimes results in screaming and hysterical behavior on the other persons part. He also wants to eat little animals so walking him at night can result in an encounter with a skunk or raccoon. I try to hold strong and keep him in heel position, but he gets into the red zone so fast that I lose complete control. I want to use a shock collar to get him to listen to me during walks. Will he become aggressive in the future due to me using the shock collar to keep him under control? Is it cruel and unusal to use this type of collar under any circumstance?

If used correctly, a shock collar does not make a dog aggressive.

Nor when used correctly are they cruel.

How do you say/spell dog obedience trainer in German?

a dog obedience trainer can be translated with "Trainer fuer Hunde" or even better "Hundetrainer". It’s not common to use the German word "Lehrer" in this context; so "Hundelehrer" wouldn’t be wrong but rarely be used …

Does any one have any potty training tips or techniques for a stubborn little boy? Age:2?

I have an older son that was potty trained before he turned 2 and the doctor said it’s about that time. I just need some tips because he is a little difficult, sometimes he’ll go and sometime he won’t.

Consistancy is the key. potty training is one of the most difficult things for parent and child. Both my kids were done by 2 1/2. It is important that you teach him to understand that he doesn’t want to be messy. So you will have to change him as soon as he goes. Choose a statement that will associate discomfort in being soiled so he will establish a connection. Something like "Ut OH, you went potty in your pants". Once the connection is established keep a training potty available for him and after he eats have a potty time and sit him on it. Also create a very colorful calendar and let him put a sticker on it each time he goes in the potty. Once he goes make a big deal and praise him. The object is to make him feel proud about what he is doing.

Help my puppy needs some training?

Our puppy is 4 months old and is a Border Collie/Springer Spaniel mix and we love him to death but our issue is he is constantly jumping on us and try’s to nip at our face when we reach down to pet him. He is so bad that my 2 year old son can’t play outside unless we crate the dog. I know he is a puppy, and puppies do this but is there a way to train him that’s less humane than smacking him around or stepping on his feet. I don’t really punish the dog but my husband sure does. The owner we bought him from says the best way to get him to stop jumping up on us is to step on his hind feet until he gets the message, and as far as nipping at our face we should smack him in his face. I don’t want to pay for puppy training because we can’t afford it, but i want some advice on puppy training techniques that u use or have learned about. Any advice would be appreciated, i want to be a good mom to my kids and my pup. :) Also, we have cats that come into the backyard and climb on the fence and he is so terrified of them that he barks crazily, growls and his back hair stands up.. just today i showed him that it’s okay and they won’t hurt him if he’s nice.. so now he is a little better.. plus the cat i showed him that was okay, is a neighbors cat that acts like a dog because he grew up with dogs, so when he paws at our pup he doesn’t use claws. I just don’t want him to bark at everything he is unfamiliar with. Am i doing some stuff right or what? Please help

Thanks.

As far as the cat fears, your doing fine. Just introduce him slowly to friendly cats and he will realize there is nothing to be afraid about. Maybe ask your neighbor if your dog and their cat can somehow get together in a controlled area and socialize some. Praise your dog when he is playing with the cat, and pretty soon he’ll get the message.

The nipping is a problem. Most puppies will nip a little, but if she is constantly doing it, there may be a problem. When your dog attempts to nip at you, say NO loudly, and walk away ignoring him for 1 minute. Then continue on as normal. DONT smack your dog! This will only teach him to be afraid of you. Also, instead of yelling no, you can also let out a loud "YIP", kind of like the sound that puppies make when they are hurt, and then ignore for 1 minute. When puppies play, this sound tells the other that he is going too rough, and it usually ends it. If this doesn’t help, I’m pretty sure your gonna need proffessional help, especially since he is biting your younger one.

Good luck!
